Incredible! “More than 800 immigrants mistakenly granted citizenship by Department of Homeland Security!”
Could this be the incompetence and absurdity that Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, refers to?
This is basis for Trump’s campaign for securing the borders and restricting immigration – until “we know what the hell we are doing!”
If we cannot properly vet those who are already here, how on earth are we going to vet those who aim to come to the USA?
Some mistakes are disturbingly costly.
But here is the dig, the mistake was granted to immigrants from countries of concern to national security or with high rates of immigration racket.
The Homeland Security Department’s inspector general said the mistake happened after immigrants falsified biodata and used same to apply for citizenship.
Their fingerprints weren’t captured also because that data was equally missing from government databases.
DHS said lack of digital fingerprint records does not necessarily mean the individuals committed fraud.
The report does not identify any of the immigrants by name, but Inspector General John Roth’s auditors said they were all from “special interest countries”.
Roth’s report said fingerprints are missing from federal databases for as many as 315,000 immigrants.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement are yet to review more than 140,000 of these immigrants to add fingerprints to digital records.
Roth’s report said federal prosecutors have accepted two criminal cases that led to the immigrants being stripped of their citizenship.
But prosecutors declined another 26 cases. ICE is investigating 32 other cases after closing 90 investigations.
Several members of Congress criticized the Obama administration Monday in the wake of Roth’s report.
Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Michael McCaul, said ICE should quickly investigate all of the cases.
Mistakenly awarding citizenship have serious consequences because such a fellow can take security-sensitive jobs.
Roth’s report says three of these immigrants were able to acquire aviation or transportation worker credentials.
This grants them access to secure areas in airports or maritime facilities and vessels.
A fourth person is now a law enforcement officer.
Officials say they will review every file identified as a case of possible fraud. That’s supposed to comfort us?
They should be detaining everyone with an incomplete file until they complete the file or deport them.
We sure hope we can reverse and revoke this terrible and shameful error of mistakenly granting citizenship.
