Ebonyi State Governor: “Fulani herders must not leave”

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has asked Fulani Herdsmen to relocate to Ebonyi State. He has offered both grazing routes and reserves for herdsmen. According to him, it is unconstitutional to ask Fulani herdsmen to leave the South East.

Governor Umahi said grazing routes will be located in areas without farmlands. “We are consulting with local communities so as to arrange grazing routes and make same known to herdsmen to lessen clashes between farmers and herdsmen.”

He however supported calls for the disarming herders. Umahi reiterated his administration’s determination to ensure cordial relationship exists between herdsmen and farmers.

He also instructed traditional rulers to conduct meetings that ensures citizens are law abiding. According to him, the government will not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law to bear on anybody who attacks herdsmen in the state.

Condemning the attacks in Enugu, Umahi described the clashes as unfortunate. He instituted a committee comprising the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Commissioner for Border, Peace and Conflict Resolution and Special Adviser, Special Assistant on Internal Security.

The committee is charged with crafting modalities that will stem the tide of rising violence in Ebonyi State.

A contrasting stance echoed from Delta State. A House Assembly in the State, Evance Ivwurie, advised his constituents to be watchful about odd persons in their vicinities. He warned that anybody who who establishes any form of close contact with herdsmen should be immediately reported to the authorities.

According to him “As for us in Ethiope East LGA, I have provided the leadership that has formed a ring around the herdsmen making it a wrong and costly option to kill any of our constituents.”

Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, Idemili Branch spoke to reporters regarding the uncidence in Uzo Uwani. He said, “We have been hearing these things as rumors from far away, but the recent one at Ukpabi-Nimbo community in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State is most bizarre and should be condemned in all its ramifications by all right-thinking members of the society.

“Human lives, no matter how frail, are supposed to be sacrosanct and cannot be equaled to lives of cows. The lives of 1,000 cows can never be equated to one human life and people killing and annihilating an entire community for the sake of cattle can, at best, be equated to cannibals.”
