President Muhammadu Buhari has declared a subtle support for the PDP’s candidate for Ondo Governorship election scheduled to hold tomorrow.
Let’ begin by laying some background info: Ondo State governorship election holds this week.
Two candidates are laying claim to as to who is the authentic PDP’s flag bearer.
One side of the divide is Jimoh Ibrahim, while Eyitayo Jegede is on the other side. Mr. Jegede won the Primaries.
After the primaries, both parties had gone to court to determine who the authentic flag bearer is.
Jimoh Ibrahim won the court case and INEC declared him the Party’s governorship flag bearer.
Jimoh Ibrahim just opened a campaign office in the State capital few weeks ago. He has no local and grassroots structure.
Many are suspecting that Jimoh Ibrahim is a pawn in the hands of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
They allege APC’s plan is to present a surrogate and weak candidate in from the opposition so APC’s Rotimi Akeredolu will win.
Since Buhari has fallen out of favor with Bola Tinubu, his bet best will be to gain inroads in the South West politics.
He will need the South-West to win the 2019 presidential elections for APC – whether he contests or not.
To buttress this stance, PDP’s Caretaker Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has given additional facts on Buhari’s tacit support for PDP.
Markarfi revealed that factional PDP chairman, Senator Ali Modu-Sheriff, is working for the APC.
He disclosed that Sheriff had met with Olusegun Obasanjo, who currently works for President Buhari in his hill top mansion in Ota.
In that meeting, Sheriff met with a close aide of President Buhari who purportedly struck a deal for them to back Jimoh Ibrahim.
Recall that Jimoh Ibrahim had said after the elections, he would use the Federal might to ensure Ayo Fayose (of PDP) is prosecuted.
Makarfi accused Sheriff of breaching a MoU the two camps reached to break the impasse that had divided the party.
He said: “Most members and supporters of our great party believe that Senator Sheriff is working for the smooth victory of the APC.
“That is why he is supporting Ibrahim Jimoh, who is not popular in the state and has the backing of President Buhari.
“The APC is ready to do anything to win Ondo, and our party will not be surprised to see such a scheme being hatched.
“We gave INEC relevant notices as stipulated by law. They observed our primaries and they took our nomination.
“Sheriff’s faction did primaries at midnight in Ibadan. It was not covered by INEC or any authority for that matter.
“So, if a court of law gives INEC some orders contrary to our well organized primary election that produced Jegede, it is unfortunate.
“No such court of law, in the first instance, should give such an order. They are ignoring all the other laws relating to regulations and how candidates should emerge.
“And we have absolute confidence that the appellate court should be able, before the election date, to determine the legitimate candidate of the PDP.
“We’re aware that President Buhari and ex-president Obasanjo are working behind the scenes to capture Ondo State.
