There is palpable tension within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State.
The state police command detained ward leaders of the party in Oredo Local Government Area.
One of the detainees is the Edo State youth leader of APC, Osakpanwa Eriyo.
He was detained for an alleged threat on the life of the state Secretary of the party, Chief Osaro Idah.
The youth leader also threatened a security detail attached to Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Their arrest followed a petition by chief Idah who alleged that Eriyo had threatened “To [neutralize] him the way my father was killed.”
The youth leader issued the threat during a meeting of the leaders of the party at Government House last week.
Well, trouble started when some loyalists of Eriyo were prevented from entering a meeting of the party leaders in Oredo.
Governor Godwin Obaseki had called for a peace meeting to resolve an apparent leadership crisis in the LGA.
At the meeting, Eriyo and Idah engaged in a war of words. Their shouting bouts nearly truncated the peace meeting.
Idah petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Haliru Gwandu, alleging threat to his life.
Following Eriyo’s arrest, the police refused to release the detained youth leader.
Thereafter, his loyalists stormed the police command, urging the police to detain all of them instead.
Following the confusion, Eriyo’s loyalists were also detained including some executive party members of the party in Oredo.
However, Eriyo has flatly denied threatening the Idah’s life.
“They are only fighting me to control the party in Oredo. I have not done anything to anybody,” Eriyo told journalists.
