Painter vanishes after N1m was mistakenly paid into his account

22 years old Taiye Obakoya is painter. A customer mistakenly transferred N1 million naira into account.

Taiwa disappeared into thin air.

So here is the story: Obakoya, who live at No. 26 Awolowo Street, Oworosoki, Lagos, was arraigned before justice J. O. Adepoju Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

He is standing trial on a charge marked Q/62/2016 on one count of stealing contrary to Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Prosecuting Sergeant Nicholas Akpene said that at 10:30am on October 20th, Mr. Dada Emmanuel, intending to pay money into his wife’s bank account, did a mobile phone money transfer of N1m from his bank account to the Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account of his car painter, Obakoya.

“After discovering the error, he phoned Obakoya and pleaded with him not to tamper with the money.

“In response, Obakoya told him no such amount was credited to his account.

“The next morning, the defendant refused to pick his calls.

“Suspecting a foul play, the complainant checked him at home and at his workshop. Obakoya wasn’t there.

“The complainant then reported the matter to GTB, which placed a restriction on Obakoya’s account after confirming that the N1m was successfully transferred to it and that he had already withdrawn N150,000 from it.”

Obakoya was later arrested by the Police and charged to court. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Adepoju granted him N50,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned till November 15.
