Sokoto State government introduces new tax regime

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has announced a new tax regime for all civil and public servants.

The governor disclosed that a certain percentage of the affected persons’ salaries will be deducted from source.

He said the deductions will commence next month, January 2017.

The Sokoto State government described the new tax/levy as an educational tax.

“You are aware of the declaration of Emergency on Education in this state.

“We are going all out to ensure its success.

“Everyone in the state, including wheelbarrow pushers, will be required to contribute his quota, no matter how minute,” Tambuwal said.

Tambuwal disclosed the new level in a meeting he had with labor unions in the state.

The governor, however, clarified that the deductions would run for three years only.

He sought the cooperation and understanding of all towards ensuring the success of the move.

The Head of Civil Service in Sokoto, Dr. Buhari Bello Kware, explained the modus operandi of the new scheme.

He said civil servants on Grade Levels 1 to 6 would pay 1% of their basic salaries.

Dr. Kware also said that those on Grade Levels 7 to 12 would pay 1.5% and those on levels 13 to 16 to pay 2%.

Pensioners are not spared from the scheme as they too will pay 1 of their pension while board members who are paid allowances, would also pay 1%.

He said Public servants including the governor, deputy governor, commissioners, special advisers and assistants would pay 5%.

Also, chairmen and LGA councilors would pay 5% and local government secretaries will pay 3%.
