Virginia Thrasher has won the first Gold medal in Rio Olmpic.
She is just 19 years old.
She won the gold in women’s 10m air rifle title at the Deodoro shooting venue.
This is her first Olympic appearance.
She won the gold in a shooting competition edging out China’s Du Li who won gold in Athens in 2004.
Defending Olympic champion Yi Siling, also of China, took the bronze medal.
Thrasher established an early lead after battling with the Russian shooter Daria Vdovina.
An enthralling competition was led briefly by Daria Vdovina, one of the Russian contingent competing.
Daria stumbled midway through the competition and finished fifth.
Thrasher was awarded the first gold of the Games by International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach.
She finished with 208 points.
There are over 300 titles on offer over the next fortnight at the 2016 Olympics.
Virginia Thrasher claimed gold just 11 hours after Brazilian marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro lit the Olympic cauldron at the climax of Friday’s spectacular opening ceremony.
Surprise absentees from the final were Serbian nationals, Andrea Arsovic and Ivana Maksomovic.
They fell of the race as they misfired during the qualifying statges.
For New York native Thrasher this was a dream Olympic debut after only taking up the sport four years ago.
