President Muhammadu Buhari is from Katsina State. The present Governor of the state is Bello Masari.
The former Governor of the State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shema, belongs to the PDP, while the incumbent governor is of APC.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has accused Shema of gross financial misconduct.
EFCC said the agency had invited Alhaji Shema to come and explain how about N70 billion disappeared under his watch.
Shema is yet to honor the invite, despite repeated reminders for close to 12 months.
Recall that EFCC had invited Shema in December of 2015. Shema responded by writing to EFFC that he was out of the country.
“He wrote back to us that he would visit as soon as he returned, but he never did,” an EFCC source said.
Speaking through his spokesperson, Oluwabusola Olawale, Shema said he couldn’t have ignored the summons by EFCC.
Mr. Olawale said it was true that the EFCC wrote Mr. Shema while he was away.
He added that subsequent correspondences were duly acknowledged.
“The EFCC sent another invitation and Mr. Shema agreed to honor the invitation with his lawyer, Wole Olanipekun.
“But the meeting with the EFCC could not hold because the officials were engaged elsewhere.
“Subsequently, Mr. Olanipekun wrote EFCC in July this year requesting for a date to be given and up till date, no date has been fixed by EFCC for the meeting.
Shema believes that the current government of Bello Masari are out to humiliate him.
“The allegations made by Mr. Masari are false, malicious and targeted to tarnish the image of Mr. Shema who served creditably well under the platform of PDP,” Shema’s spokesman said.
The former PDP governor is being sought for purportedly mismanaging N70 billion naira of state funds.
Shema is also accused of pilfering LGA’s monthly allocation accounts. A sum of N50 billion is believed to have been mismanaged this way.
Against this backdrop, the EFCC has launched a nationwide manhunt for Mr. Shema beginning with his being declared wanted.
“The 59-year-old ex-governor hails from the Dutsena-ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
“He is tall, light in complexion and speaks Hausa and English fluently.
“Anybody, having useful information as to his whereabouts, should contact the commission,” EFCC warrant stated.
