President Muhammadu Buhari had set up an advisory committee aimed at fighting against corruption. The body is largely made up of university dons. Professor Itse Sagay heads that committee.
When the body was set up, President Buhari stated that “We challenge civil society organizations to intensify actions in the fight against corruption in the country by mobilizing people in taking actionable campaigns in peaceful protests to national assemblies and appropriate authorities”
Two weeks ago, one of the committee members, Professor Benedicta Daudu, an associate professor of law and head of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law of the Faculty of Law in UNIJOS was caught cheating in an examination.
Professor Daudu enrolled for a master’s degree in Public Policy in UNIJOS. She was caught cheating in one of exams. Professor Daudu is alleged to have sneaked in answer sheets containing answers to an exam she and other students were to write.
Reacting to the matter, Premium times reports that the Dean, Faculty of Social Science of the University, Prof. Ezekiel Best, said “I was not even around when the incident happened, so I don’t have all the details at this time. But there is nothing like that that we are doing nothing about it.”
When professor Daudu was contacted to hear her side of the story, she hung up the phone on reporters. However, the public relations officer of UNIJOS, Abdullahi Abdullahi, stated that the case is yet to be officially presented to the UNIJOS’ governing board.
According to Abdullahi, “I tried to confirm whether there was anything like that, really I couldn’t get any confirmation. It has not been brought to the attention of management. So right now I wouldn’t know,” he said.
“Although the university has internal processes that deals with these issues, even if there was anything like that, which I doubt much, it would have to go through the normal internal processes from the department to the faculty and then to the exam misconduct committee.”
What would President Muhammadu do?
