FG to install toll-gate along Enugu-Onitsha highway?

The Enugu-Onitsha highway has become some sort of death trap.

Motorists plying the road spend hours on a journey that shouldn’t be more than 60 minutes.

The fastest travel takes 4 hours!

The pot holes on the highway are more like trenches.

Relief seem to be on the horizon as the Federal Government has commenced plans to rebuild the terribly dilapidated expressway.

But the deplorable road would soon witness a massive facelift.

The Federal Government has reached an agreement to concession the highway to the China CAMCE for rehabilitation.

China CAMCE Engineering Limited has indicated interest to reconstruct the road.

The contract will be under the Operate and Transfer, BOT, concession.

What this means is that, the Chinese company will rebuild the road and add toll gates there.

After a number of years, they will transfer same to the Government.

The story of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway was traumatic with the dual carriageway became death trap.

One of the Chinese subcontractors, Kingsley Agha said “They (China CAMCE) are waiting for approval from the Federal Government.

“They are waiting on Governors Ugwuanyi and Obinno of Enugu and Anambara States.

“The Chinese firm wants to develop that road and put toll gates on them

“This help recoup the investment they put into the road.

“Both Enugu and Anambara States has approached the Federal Government for formal approval.

“They are not asking for money.

“This is one of the biggest Chinese companies that entered Nigerian market.

“They are not here to look for money but only to get guarantee of safe business environment.”

The Chinese firm is set to have set aside $60 billion dollars for this and other projects.

Whether President Buhari will approve the proposal is another ball game.
