More than 200 Muslim youths yesterday attacked St. Philip’s Catholic Parish, Baki Iku, close to Zuma Rock in Abuja.
Properties worth millions of Naira were damaged in the rampage.
According to the Vicar-General of the Parish, Reverend-Father Gobep Luka Sylvester, “Sometime around 2pm, some Muslim youths numbering 200 left their Mosque after their Friday Jumat prayer and rushed to the Church premises.
“The climbed the wall and destroyed everything in the Church: the windows, the alter, musical instruments, the chapel.
“The security man in the church premises was beaten to pulp.
“Some women who were holding a prayer meeting were chased away.
“The seminarian who is resident in the premises was also beaten up and chased away.”
The Reverend father said the attack has been reported to the police.
Investigations as to what caused the rampage revealed that youths claimed Friday was their worship days and that Christians may not worship on Fridays, except Sunday.
“Just last week, Mrs. Eunice Olawale, a mobile preacher of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, was killed by some fanatical Muslims in Kubwa, FCT.
“How long are we going to continue like this?” the Reverend Father asked.
Recall that in 2012, a suspected Boko Haram member, Alhaji Kabiru Sokoto, detonated a bomb on Christmas day.
That attack killed several Catholics and passers-by at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Madalla.
Curiously, yesterday’s attack at St. Philips Catholic Church is close to St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.
The police claims to be investigating the matter.
