Police barracks building collapses in Lagos State

As families celebrated Christmas, a major disaster struck a police barracks in the nation’s commercial nerve center, Lagos, yesterday.

The early morning incident marred the celebration for some police families who were grieved by the demise of their loved ones.

A police barrack building at High Way Police Barracks opposite Area F, Ikeja collapsed, claiming the lives of people.

At the barracks, the deceased policeman was said to be having his bath.

He had some guests in the house.

One of the guests was reportedly using one of the restrooms when the incident occurred.

Following a large crashing sound, a section of the two-storey building collapsed.

It was gathered that the toilets and stairway of wing D block of the barracks caved in at 4: 30 am.

A witness said, “I was inside my room with my children.

“We heard a large sound and the whole building was shaking.

“We quickly rushed down together with other occupants.”

The Nigerian police barracks is notorious for dilapidated and weak structures.

Most of the buildings have long outlived their ages and require urgent attention.
